Dry vs wet magnetic separation — which to choose

The choice between dry and wet separation is usually settled by the material itself rather than by preference. Free-flowing powders suit dry electromagnetic separators; slurries, glazes and dispersions suit wet units.

Dry separation keeps the process simple: no water, no drying step afterwards, and no change to moisture content. It is the natural fit for cathode and anode powders, graphite, quartz sand, sugar, salt and flour, where adding liquid would create a second problem to solve.

Wet separation works where the material is already a slurry, or where the iron is locked inside agglomerates that need liquid to disperse. Kaolin, feldspar, ceramic glaze and quartz slurry all fall into this group, and the continuous design runs inline with existing tank and pump arrangements.

Three inputs decide the rest: particle size, throughput and the level of iron in the feed. Send us those, and we will tell you honestly which route fits — including when permanent magnet equipment is the better value because the material does not need a powered coil.
