Kaolin brightness: what buyers actually specify

Kaolin buyers rarely ask for "low iron" in the abstract. They specify brightness, and they specify the iron-bearing minerals that depress it — because those minerals also affect viscosity, abrasiveness and how the grade behaves on a paper machine or in a coating formulation.

The practical consequence is that brightness is won or lost on the fine fraction. Discolouring minerals concentrate in the fine particle sizes, so a separation stage that only treats the coarse stream leaves most of the problem in the product.

Wet high-gradient magnetic separation fits kaolin processing because the material is already in slurry. Dispersed particles present their full surface to the magnetic matrix, and the continuous design keeps throughput steady without interrupting the plant.

We size the unit from the slurry: solids content, particle size distribution, throughput and the brightness target. Where the feed varies, we discuss a staged set-up so that grade changes do not force a production compromise.
